ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM

Resilient and Inclusive teaching is the ability to facilitate learning experiences that are designed to be adaptable to fluctuating conditions and disruptions occasioned by two major irreversible changes in higher education – Global development and the COVID-19 pandemic. These two events have greatly changed the educational landscape and moved classrooms to virtual and remote learning necessitating also a paradigm shift in Open Distance and E-Learning pedagogies.

The International Colloquium with the theme: “Recalibrating Open Distance Education and E-Learning for Resilient and Inclusive Education” will bring together international and national ODeL practitioners to deliberate and proffer solutions for repositioning Open Distance Education and E-Learning for Resilience and Inclusiveness.

MODE OF THE COLLOQUIUM

Dr. Neil Fassina

President

Dr. Neil Fassina became president of Okanagan College on April 1, 2021.

Previously, he was president of Athabasca University (AU), Canada’s online university, since 2016. Neil oversaw the university’s five-year strategic plan to transform AU into a world-leading, digital-first university.  

He is a strong advocate for accessible, flexible, lifelong learning to enable adult learners to improve their lives and their communities.

Prior to Athabasca University, Neil held several leadership roles at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), including provost and vice president academic, as well as dean of the JR Shaw School of Business and the School of Culinary Arts.

Neil is past chair of the Council of Post-Secondary Presidents of Alberta and is president of the International Council of Distance Education.

He holds a PhD in Management from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, a BSc in psychology from the University of Calgary, and is a chartered professional in human resources (CPHR), and a chartered director through the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD.D).

Moeketsi Letseka

Moeketsi Letseka is professor of philosophy of education and African philosophy at the University of South Africa (UNISA). He is holder of the endowed United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Chair on Open Distance Learning (ODL); chairperson of the Task Force on Distance Education in the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES), as well as co-chairperson of the WCCES’s Finance Standing Committee. Prof Letseka is Editor-in-Chief of Africa Education Review, an international scholarly journal that is jointly published by UNISA Press and Taylor & Francis in the UK, and accredited by the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) and Scopus. He has 110 publications, and edited or co-edited the following books, policy briefs and Special Issues of scholarly journals:

PROFESSOR OLUWAYEMISI OBASHORO-JOHN

Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John is a Professor of Adult Education in the Department of adult Education in the University of Lagos with a B.A.Ed. (French) degree from University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). She obtained her Masters and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Lagos. She has served in various capacities since joining the services of the university in 1994 and rose to become a Professor in 2011. Her areas of emphasis are Programme evaluation, Ageing Issues and Language Study. She has considerable experience and training on Inclusivity, Inclusive Education and Learning having been actively involved in the national conferences on inclusivity, equality and diversity in University Education in Nigeria organized by the University of Lagos. 

Professor Obashoro-John holds membership of international and national professional bodies including: Board Member, International Society for Comparative Adult Education (ISCAE); Nigeria National Council for Adult Education (NNCAE); Distinguished Fellow, Institute of Security of Nigeria; Fellow, Institute of Strategic Management, Nigeria (ISMN) and Institute of Social Work of Nigeria (ISOWN). 

She has participated and presented papers at national and international conferences and workshops; is widely published with over sixty publications to her credit in books, articles, papers published in learned journals. She has been associated with the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas; Niagara University, Lewiston, New York and Julius-Maximillian University, Wurzburg, Germany as Faculty Scholar, External Assessor and Speaker/Lecturer. She remains an active player in the Adult Education landscape.

DR AKANIMO ODON

Dr Akanimo Odon holds a master’s degree in Environmental Rehabilitation, a PhD in Environmental Management from Lancaster University, UK and business and enterprise certifications and fellowships from Cambridge University UK, Stanford University USA and MIT USA. He specializes in cross-border education and innovations in research and is an expert in navigating, developing and managing relationships between academia, government and industry in Africa for economic viability, research impact, student employability and career enhancement. He has been Africa Adviser for Aberystwyth University, University of Strathclyde; University of East Anglia; Demontfort University and currently he is the African Regional Adviser for the University of London, Lancaster University and Africa Director for Zurich Elite Business School. He is CEO of Envirofly Consulting UK and recently founded Flexy-Learn (www.flexylearn.com), a one-stop online shop for distance learning provision for Africa. He is the Creator of UK Certified Careers Enhancement Programme Online (CEPO). 

In the UK, he has been an Adviser to the British Government on developing international education policies under the National Student Forum; Education Consultant for British Council; Business Development Consultant for the Grow Creative Scheme under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF); Local Content Consultant to City and Guilds UK; and Local Content Adviser to BG Group.

In the last ten years, Dr. Odon has organized and facilitated over 50 Africa-focused international workshops and conferences; liaised and collaborated with government, industries and academia in over 30 African countries; developed over 150 strategic educational, research and commercial partnerships between UK and African organizations; facilitated and supported the setting up of over 30 African-focused SMEs; designed and implemented over 50 strategic capacity building and knowledge transfer schemes and programmes; delivered innovative research impact and management training to over 4,000 African researchers and professionals and mentored over 500 young African entrepreneurs. He is an author of the international best seller practical career transformation book titled ‘The Graduate Code’. 

Engr. Kayode Odedina

Director, Open Distance Education, National University Commission, Abuja

Engr. Kayode Odedina [JP] is a Scientist, an Engineer, an ICT Practitioner, an Educationist, an Administrator and a Quality Assurance Practitioner.

Engr. Kayode Odedina holds a National Diploma (ND) of Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with Distinction in 1982. He obtained his Higher National Diploma (HND) of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro in Electrical Engineering (Electronics Option) with Upper Credit in 1985. Engr. Odedina obtained his M. Eng. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (with specialisation in Telecommunication Systems Engineering) of Anambra State University of Technology, Enugu in 1991. He also possesses an MBA in Technology Policy and Management of Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye. Engr. Odedina holds a B.Sc. Degree in Information Technology of the National Open University of Nigeria as well as a Diploma in Management of Higher Education Institutes at the Galilee International Management Institute, Israel.

Engr. Kayode Odedina joined the services of the National Universities Commission in April 2002 as an Assistant Chief Hardware Engineer. He was appointed the Acting Director of the Directorate of Open, Distance and e-Learning in March, 2020.

Engr. Odedina has attended various professional and management training programmes both within and outside Nigeria. He is duly registered with both the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and Computer Professional (Registration Council) of Nigeria (CPN. Engr. Kayode Odedina attained IC3 digital literacy certification in August 2020.

Engr. Kayode Odedina has won academic, professional and social laurels in the past that included the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s Professional Fellowship Award on e-education followed at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation, UK in 2005.

Professor Pat Utomi,

PATRICK OKEDINACHI UTOMI. BA; MPA, MA, PhD, DBA Born 6 February 1956 in Kaduna, Raised in Jos, Maiduguri, Kano, Gusau, Onitsha, Ibadan, Lagos and attended Universities at Nsukka (UNN) Bloomington IN (Indiana University) with Executive Education and Post-Doctoral work in Boston, (Harvard Business School), Fontainebleau France, (INSEAD); Evanston IL, (Kellogg School, Northwestern-University); and scholar in Residence in Washington (American University, and SAIS, of Johns Hopkins University.

 

UTOMI, noted Political Economist, Professor of Entrepreneurship, who served as Director of the Centre for Applied Economics at the Lagos Business School, is also a celebrated Boardroom veteran. He serves on the Board of the Africa Practice of Leading Global Professional services firm, Deloitte; as one of only two non-executives on the Africa Board; has been a top executive in manufacturing, as Chief Operating Officer for Volkswagen of Nigeria, and in the social enterprise sector as founder of the Centre for Values in Leadership and Chairman of the boards of several highly regarded social enterprises such as PIN, Women Arise; and NUTRA (Nigerians United To Resist Anarchy). He has served in Government at a Presidential Advisory position at age 27, and Chairman of Boards of Parastatals including the National Manpower Board. 

 

Much regarded for the ease with which he traverses several sectors of economic activity and bridges the ‘Knowing- Doing’ gap, he has been at the basement in the founding of several iconic brands and path finding Nigerian enterprises, including the country’s first internet service provider; Linkserve, Platinum Bank, and Business Day. As business angel and Entrepreneur, he has been a business Angel in the founding of several well-regarded startups and at home, in praxis, as he is in teaching and research.     

                 

Utomi who was voted by the Nigerian public in a Vanguard Newspapers/ Silverbird television poll as one of Nigeria’s top ten Living Legends, in 2009, is considered one of Nigeria’s top academics, a leading Corporate Executive and Entrepreneur, and civil society icon. He was nominated twice as candidate for office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

EUGENIA ABU

Eugenia Abu is one of Nigeria’s most recognizable faces having anchored the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA’s National Network News for all of 17 years. A foremost Broadcast Journalist, she served the NTA in various capacities as Head of NTA International news, Head of Presentation, Head of Creative writing and Head Customer Service among several other roles rising to the top of her profession as Executive Director Programs before her retirement in 2017 after thirty four and a half years of meritorious service. 

A Multimedia Strategist, Media Consultant, Trainer and Columnist, Eugenia Abu is Managing Partner/CEO of The Eugenia Abu Media center; a creative, reading, Media and training Hub in Abuja. Over the years, Eugenia has consulted for ECOWAS on Media and peace building during elections across the West African sub-region and the National Democratic Institute on improving communication skills of female politicians. She was National Media Consultant to the ILO on Media and Human trafficking in 2011 and Justice 4 All on Media and police reforms in 2013. Mrs Abu has also served as Editorial board member for This Day Newspapers and was on the Nigeria vision 2020 committee.  

Recently she worked with the Inclusive Friends Association and Save the Children UK on Reporting disabilities, training the media on appropriate language in reporting People with disabilities in Nigeria. A former council member of the National Human rights commission, Eugenia Abu also served on the Lagos state Innovation council as a council member. Offshore, she was a high level moderator at the NeXT CEO Summit in Mauritius and is currently a Judge on the OFAB Africa- wide Media Awards, the National Maltina Teachers Award as well as the Price water House, PWC Media Excellence Awards in Business reporting.

Eugenia Abu is on the faculty of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, the Africa Centre for leadership and strategy and a visiting consultant/ Lecturer at Bingham University, Nigeria where she teaches International broadcasting and specialized reporting. She is a board member of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy, and Development. 

Eugenia studied English graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 1981. In 1992, she graduated with a distinction from City University, London with a Masters in Communication policy studies. She enrolled in the Masters in Creative writing course at Keele university, Staffordshire UK, graduating in 2011.  Eugenia Abu believes mentoring is the unexplored key to development in Africa and has mentored over 300 young persons in the last five years. She also runs a week long summer boot camp for children aged between 7 and 14 for the past 13 years.

A high level moderator and National compere, she anchored the Presidential inauguration of President Yaradua, President Jonathan and President Buhari. A veteran interviewer, Eugenia has in her portfolio, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President Sirleaf Johnson of Liberia, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and the Nobel Laurette for literature, Nadine Gordimer among many others

A Chevening scholar and USIS fellow, Eugenia is the author of two books, the prize winning “In the Blink of an eye” (an essay collection) and the critically acclaimed “Don’t look at me like that”, a collection of Poems. For a decade she wrote a weekly column on Books, “Five favorite books with Eugenia Abu” for Sunday Trust.  She currently holds down a much loved weekly column in Business day, “Tales from the main road”, which has been running for over ten years. 

She lives in Abuja with her family.

   

Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe,

FAS, Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos

Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe is a Professor of Botany at the University of Lagos. He holds a PhD Botany(Ife) and MBA(Unilag).
His area of specialization has been chiefly in Molecular Plant Systemics, updating the taxonomy of some plant genera and using the anatomical features in the identification of sterile and fragmentary plant specimens. He has also been involved in exploration and testing of herbal drugs for their medicinal and antimicrobial properties. 
Prof Ogundipe has been able to show the genetic diversity and relationships between different plant taxa as well as assess phylogenetic relationship among plant populations using molecular techniques. 
His over 120 publications have been very relevant in botanical research with over 916 citations from 2009 till date. He has supervised 18 PhD and 45 MSc students.
Prof Ogundipe is a Fellow of the Nigeria Academy of Science; Fellow,  Royal Society of Biology,  London; Fellow,  Leadership for Environment and Development; Fellow,  Linnean Society of London and current  President, Botanical Society of Nigeria. 
Since joining the University of Lagos in 1990, Prof Ogundipe has held different administrative positions including,  Head, Department of Botany; Sub-Dean, Faculty of Science; Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies; Director,  Academic Planning Unit; and in 2016 appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic &Research).
Prof Ogundipe is passionate about the Sustainable Development Goals and is involved in several developmental projects to address them. His hobbies are travelling, reading and nature. 
Prof Ogundipe is happily married with three sons.

PROFESSOR UCHENNA NKIRUKA UDEANI

Professor Uchenna Nkiruka Udeani holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology (B.Sc) and a Ph.D in Science Education from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She is a Professor of Science Education and the current Director of the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the University of Lagos.
Professor Udeani’s area of research interest is conceptual learning relating to the use of prior conceptions and adaptive cognition in measuring the learning of science concepts. She has a special interest in the underrepresentation of girls and women in STEM disciplines and has developed a Gender Inclusive Instructional Strategy for use in secondary schools to help more girls learn science. Currently she is working on an Affirmative Action Project aimed at improving girls’ attitudes and achievement in science.

Professor Udeani is a consultant to many organisations including the Federal Government of Nigeria, UNESCO, World Bank, ENERGIA, Friends of the Environment (FOTE) ALOFOS, Science Foundation, Ajesola Majekodunmi Foundation (ASMAF) Nigeria Breweries, Felix Ohieweri Education Foundation. She is also on the Board of Directors of CDNet a Career Development Initiative for youths. She works as an Equal Opportunities Specialist for several non-governmental organizations.
Beyond her professional career, Professor Udeani is involved in several community projects aimed at empowering women in Leadership, Politics, Education and Life Skills. She founded the Girls and Science Outreach (GASO) a non-governmental, non-profit making organization aimed at popularizing STEM career and disciplines among Nigerian girls.
The seasoned scholar belongs to a number of professional organizations including the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, Organization of Women in Science for the Developing World, African Women in Science and Engineering, Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, Phi Delta Kappa to mention a few. In 2017 she was appointed as a member of the Programme Committee of the International Dialogue on STEM (IDoS) in Germany.
